Investigations into the use of municipal solid waste incineration ash as aggregate in concrete produ

Utilisation potential of mineral residues

The thermal treatment of municipal solid waste generates large quantities of incineration ash, the majority of which is currently disposed of in landfills. As part of the ASHCON research project, the potential use of municipal solid waste incineration ash as a raw material for the manufacture of concrete products was investigated. Following various processing steps to remove most of the metals and glass, the resulting coarse mineral fraction is intended to partially replace natural aggregate in the base concrete of concrete paving units. Experimental investigations were carried out to characterise the material and physical properties of the processed incineration ash and to assess its effects on concrete workability and strength, as well as the environmental impact of the resulting concrete.
