Rising temperatures and more frequent heat waves are posing particular challenges for cities. Asphalt, roofs and façades store large amounts of heat during the day and release it again at night. This creates so-called heat islands, which significantly increase temperatures in urban areas. At the same time, demand for air conditioning systems is increasing, with correspondingly high energy consumption and additional CO2 emissions.
